Okay, so this has been my fascination lately for my games – nested encounter tables.
Each entry on the table gets a mini 1d4 table worked into it. While the below table is only a d6, it actually gives me 24 different options, since every entry as four sub options.
I tweaked this one a bit so it’d be more usable outside of the game I designed it for. Thoughts?
1. 1d4 town guards look for suspicious people. They are (1d4): 1. looking for a fight 2. bored and not interested in doing their job 3. overly talkative 4. thieves wearing fake uniforms.
2. A pickpocket. She targets (1d4): 1. A random PC, 2. A noble, 3. A town guard, 4. A drunk gnome.
3. A run way carriage. Inside is (1d4): 1. The thief who took it. 2. A noble. 3. No one. 4. A young child.
4. Someone watches the PCs. It’s (1d4): 1. an alley cat, 2. a thief looking for a score 3. a local priest, wary of unbelievers 4. a pseudodragon.
5. 1d4 pilgrims from far away. They (1d4): 1. Recognize the PCs. 2. Are being harassed by 1d4 guards. 3. Are hassling a drunk gnome. 4. Are running from an angry mob.
6. Two people are having a disagreement. (1d4): 1. Two Dwarves argue over the details of a bet. 2. A noble beats her servant. 3. An Elf tells a Tiefling to go back to where they came from. 4. A guard shakes down an innocent woman.
