Today marks the first email in a series of new design diaries Code named Fantasy Commander, my goal is to make a game reminiscent of Blackmoore with some other influences.
Before I start, I figured I should know what it is I’m creating.
What are my goals for this project?
What am I building toward?
There’s a few things I know that I want it to accomplish.
- Be playable in a play-by-post fashion. I want to design the game to be playable in Discord.
- Support both mass battle and one to one combat.
- Have PCs be the main driver of above ground action.
- Have a massive dungeon PCs can also explore.
- At the wargame level, have a focus on operations as opposed to tactics.
- Eventually retrofit my Dungeon 24 project to fit this game.
- Have it feel true to my interpretation of the spirit of that first Blackmoore game.
I’d like to speak about that third bullet point for a moment. One of the things that I believed really changed going from Blackmoore to DnD (or even from Brownstone), was the idea that the PCs were innately on a team. In Blackmoore, the players ruled various kingdoms (though some were in nowhere near such a position of power). Alliances were a lot more tenuous.
Currently, my Dungeon 24 project has four PC factions and I’d like to add one or two more. They are competing colonizers of an island (yes, not great). Their main antagonists are meant to be each other.
Likely, as I go through the source material and engage in the act of creation, I’ll come up with other goals, but it was important to me to have some sort of direction before setting out on this journey.
Is there anything you’d like to see on this list that’s not? For you to get excited about this game, would would you like to see? Leave a comment below.
Talk soon,
– James
