Where do elves go when they die? (d10)

What happens when Elves get old? (d10)

  1. The obvious answer – they get on a boat and travel to the autumn lands, a realm humans can not go.

  2. They turn into trees, the variety reflecting their virtues in life. This is a slow process, leading to areas of the forest where the trees really do watch you.

  3. Nothing. They continue on like they always have.

  4. When they reach a certain age, they are expected to voluntarily cross over to the other side via a ceremonial knife. This ritual is performed amidst a small number of their family and friends. The elves memories are transferred to them in the process.

  5. A mist descends over the woods. All the elves know this mist and they know what it means. One of their number wanders off into it, heedless of the calls of their fellows, and disappears. No one tries to stop them – though they don’t know what happens next, they know it’s natural.

  6. They turn to stone. The statues that are all over the elven lands used to be alive.

  7. Little known fact – Elves hatch from eggs. When they do, the young hunger – the old provide nourishment in a grisly feast.*

  8. They don’t actually die, they’re just bored. Check the body for fake moustaches and forged passports, they might make a run for it when your back is turned.*

  9. They become thinner and thinner… well, maybe not thinner, just less. Eventually, they become a ghost. In another thousand years, even the ghost will fade away.

  10. There is a sacred cave in an ancient grove, protected by a powerful druid. When an elf feels called, they go to the cave, only to emerge one year later as an animal of the forest. You never know what animal you see may have once been an elf.

Bones. So many bones. How many people have been buried here?

You find a rusty long sword and a small, golden vulture head worth 250 gp.

Red Sand

The sand here on the edge of the sacrificial ground is loose and looks recently churned.

Vulture Priest

The Vulture Priests are the enemy of knowledge and enlightenment. They seek to bring the eternal silence, the end of all things. Decay and obedience is their only god.

Immune to the Divine: The spells and powers of clerics and paladins have no effect on them.
Weapons: They frequently use wickedly curved daggers, which they use for sacrificial purposes.
Soul Clouders: There is a 10% chance that any Vulture Priest can use the sleep spell once per day. The targets are still awake, but they are beset by such a deep depression that it has the same effect as sleep. They may only watch what unfurls around them.
